Governing bodies need to notify the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board (NSSAB) if they plan to merge 2 or more accredited schools (amalgamate) or divide an accredited school into separate schools.
If NSSAB has issued a governing body with a compliance or show cause notice or the governing body has sought an external review to appeal a decision we have made, the governing body must resolve these concerns before proceeding with amalgamation or division.
Amalgamation of schools
Two or more accredited schools combining to create a single school is known as amalgamation. The governing body of 1 of the original schools will become the governing body of the new school. This governing body is automatically eligible for government funding after amalgamation if the governing bodies of the original schools were eligible before amalgamation.
The new school's attributes of accreditation for the sites the new school will operate must match those of the original schools' sites. If they differ, the governing body may need to consider other options such as surrendering existing accreditations and applying for accreditation for the new school.

Division of schools
Splitting 1 accredited school, which must have at least 2 sites, into 2 or more schools is known as division. The governing body of the original school continues in this capacity for both new schools. If the governing body was eligible for government funding previously, it is automatically eligible for government funding after division.
The new schools' attributes of accreditation at each site the schools operate must match those of the original school's sites. If they differ, the governing body may need to consider other options such as surrendering existing accreditation and applying for accreditation for each separate school.
